Los Angeles Times: Sports-Mike DiGiovanna: Mike Scioscia Sees No Need For Baseball in November

MLB or Major League Baseball for those of you who don’t follow and love Pro Baseball as much as me. Has done an excellent job of not trying to imitate the other 4-5 Major Sports Leagues in America and Canada. For example half of NBA and NHL teams make the playoffs every year as well as in MLS or Major League Soccer. Meaning mediocre teams make the playoffs and advance every year in those leagues. Several of them have even made it to the Championship Finals. Like the 1981 Houston Rockets who were 39-43 that year. The 1991 Minnesota North Stars had a losing record in the NHL and made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. But in the NFL only 12-32 teams make the playoffs every year.

Meaning you have to almost every year, with 2010 being an exception with the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks. You have to win 9-10 out of 16 games just to qualify for the playoffs. Meaning only good teams in the NFL make the playoffs every year. In MLB only 8-30 teams make the playoffs every year, six Division Champions and two Wild Cards. Meaning every season there’s almost as many good teams that make the playoffs as miss the playoffs. Every season in MLB there about 5-6 clubs that win at least 85-90 games out of 162 in both the American League and National League. But only four clubs in each league make the playoffs each year.

Major League Baseball if they were to expand from 8-10 or even 12 but I would only start with 10 to see how it goes. Playoff teams each season, you still for the most part would only see good teams in the playoffs. Every playoff team winning between 85-90 games. The Toronto Blue Jays are an excellent example of this of having several seasons the last few years of having 85-90 win seasons but not making the playoffs. Because they finished 5th or 6th in the AL. Back in 2006 they won more games in the Regular Season then the eventual MLB Champion St. Louis Cardinals. But since Toronto finished I believe 5th in the AL and St. Louis finished 4th in the NL.

The Cardinals made the playoffs as a Wild Card while the Blue Jays were playing Golf in October like they have for the last seventeen straight seasons. Even though they had several good years in that stretch, just never winning their division or finishing fourth in the AL. Expanding to ten playoff teams and adding in a Wild Card round. Where the Wild Card teams would play each other in the First Round. Would take nothing away from Division Champions, if anything it would help them. Because they would get a First Round bye and a few days off after a long season. And it would be great for the fans because more teams would be in the Playoff Race instead of just the Usual Suspects. And would be great TV as well.

Its time for MLB to modernize and add a Wild Round to its Playoff Format, because they have enough good teams every season that are Playoff Caliber. And the fans of these clubs would thank and reward them for it.
